At least four people, including an engineer, were killed in an explosion in the聽 gas connection line of an Akij Venture Limited factory at Bahubal upazila in Habiganj.
Two other people were also seriously injured in the explosion.
The injured were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place at around 9:00am on Tuesday in Abdkamal village of Bahubal upazila.
Three of the four deceased have been identified as Mizan Gazi, Mahfuz and Riaz Uddin, who is an engineer of the factory.
The identity of the fourth victim could not be immediately confirmed.
Officer-in-charge of Bahubal police station Zahidul Islam confirmed the incident.
Akij Venture Ltd set up the factory in Abdkamal village of Bahubal upazila for manufacturing detergent powder and diapers. About five hundred workers work at the factory.
According to police and local people, at around 9:00am on Tuesday, a team from Dhaka came to check the pressure of the gas connection inside the factory. While they were working on the gas connection, it suddenly exploded. Mizan Gazi and Mahfuz died on the spot due to burns. The other two, including seriously injured Riaz Uddin, died at Sylhet Medical College Hospital.
Murad Hossain, manager of Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System Limited Habiganj, said, 鈥楾hey were checking the pipeline as a pre-procedure for getting a gas connection at the factory. The gas connection has not been received yet. As far as I know, they were testing the connection line with cylinder gas and at one point the explosion occurred.鈥�
Assistant superintendent of police for Bahubal Circle Zahirul Islam told reporters that the explosion took place while repairing a gas connection inside the factory. Two people were killed on the spot and two more injured in the incident died at the hospital.
No official from the Akij Venture factory, however, wanted to talk about the incident.
