
Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh on Friday called on the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus to give early general elections for democratic transition of the country.
They made the call from a ‘Dhaka rally’ held at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital Dhaka.
CPB president Mohammad Shah Alam called on the interim government to announce a roadmap on the next general elections for democratic transition of the country.
He said that the country’s people were confused about how much time would be taken by the interim government for conducting reforms and when the elections would be held.
‘So give free, fair and credible general elections as early as possible after making required reforms in the ruling system and the Election Commission,’ said Shah Alam who chaired the rally.
He also called on the interim government to continue running the state in line with the spirits of liberation war in 1971, otherwise the people would not accept it.
Former president of the party Mujahidul Islam Selim said that after the fall of fascist Sheikh Hasina government, the people were eagerly waiting to see democratic transition of the ruling system and establishing democratic rights of the people.
He proposed the formation of a new united front comprising all left and democratic political parties which would take part in the next general elections.
General secretary of the party Ruhin Hossain Prince said that the interim government formed on August 8 had not so far given any specific roadmap on holding the next general elections, so the people were confused about the interim government’s intension regarding remaining in power.
He said that the interim government had failed to control abnormal price hikes of the essential commodities, so the masses were suffering much to run their families.
Mihir Ghosh, assistant general secretary of the party, Kazi Sajjad Zahir Chandan, presidium member, and Sujan Bhawmik, son of Khetmajur leader Pradip Bhawmaik who was killed during the July uprising, among others, spoke at the rally.
At the rally, the CPB announced new programmes, including holding views exchange with different political parties for the formation of greater unity from January 10, observing Paltan killing day on January 20 and holding countrywide democratic march from January 21 to 27.
The rally was followed by a red-flag procession that paraded different city roads.
Several thousand party leaders and activists from across the country attended the rally and procession.
