About 150 local leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Gazipur on Friday evening allegedly took position in and around Joydevpur police station demanding release of an arrested Awami League local leader.
Police said that Jamaat leaders and activists also claimed the arrested, Shafiqul Sikder, 38, Awami League Mirzapur Union’s Ward 2 organising secretary to be their man.
Joydevpur police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdul Halim said that about 100-150 Jamaat leaders and activists took position in and around the police station demanding release of the arrested AL leader.
‘Jamaat activists were present in and around the police station for about half an hour since 7:30pm on Friday. Jamaat leaders have tried to force us to release the arrested but we did not do so,’ the OC added.
He said that police on Saturday produced the AL leader before a Gazipur court and the court sent him to jail.
Jamaat-e-Islami Gaziput district unit Ameer Md Jahangir Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Shafiqul Sikder became a Jamaat activist in 2018 following proper procedure.
Asked about why Shafiqul’s name was found on the committee formed in 2023, he said, ‘Awami League activists included his name in the committee without consulting him. Shafiqul is also not aware of it.’
