At least 10 people, including general students, were injured in a clash between the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, and the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, at Munshiganj Polytechnic Institute Sunday afternoon.
The clash began at about 1:30pm on campus after banned BCL activists reportedly arrived on the campus for viva examinations in various departments, according to students and police.
Police detained nine individuals suspected of involvement in the unrest.
Among the injured were four JCD activists and two BCL activists.
Members of the Bangladesh Army and police rescued the injured and transported them to Munshiganj General Hospital. Two critically injured individuals, including a JCD activist, were transferred to Dhaka for further treatment.
Witnesses reported that the presence of some BCL activists, who were followers of BCL leaders Hasan Tarif and Shahbaz Ashik, on the campus led to protests by general students and JCD members, who accused the BCL of bringing outsiders to the campus.
‘When banned BCL members entered into the campus, general students became agitated. BCL activists took some outsiders on the campus and they beaten me and other JCD activists,’ said injured JCD activist Al-Amin.
Injured BCL activist Durjoy said that he was involved in BCL politics earlier. When he arrived to the campus for examination, Chhatra Dal activists attacked on him.
Munshiganj Sadar police station’s inspector of investigation Sajib Dey stated that local students and residents resisted the entry of banned BCL members.
‘We responded to the situation to prevent further escalation, rescued the injured, and sent them to the hospital. Legal action will be taken, inspector Sajib said.
