Officials and employees of Rajshahi University formed a human chain on Monday protesting at the university authorities’ decision to abolish the quota facility for their children for undergraduate admissions.
They also demanded that the university authorities must retain the quota facility for their children in admissions and allow them to be enrolled at the university if they had the minimum eligibility to submit the application form.
Over two hundred of them under the banner of RU Officer and Employee Associations formed the human chain on the university Paris Road from 11:00am to 12 noon to press home their demand.
Monowar Hossain, assistant registrar of the agricultural project, said that RU authorities’ decision to abolish the quota facility for their children for admission was discriminatory as the same facility still existed at other universities and in the law enforcement agencies.
Moktar Hossain, acting president of RU Officers’ Association, said, ‘We will stage a sit-in in front of the university main administration building from 11:00am to 1:00pm tomorrow,’ he said, adding that they will also observe a full-day work abstention programme on Wednesday, if their demand is not met.
On Wednesday, at an emergency meeting, the university’s admission committee had decided to cancel the quota for teachers and officials but retained a 1 per cent quota for the children of Class-III and Class-IV employees.
