Till Wednesday about 11.01 crore out of total about 40.15 crore free textbooks had been distributed among the students, said the National Curriculum and Textbook Board chairman AKM Reazul Hassan on Wednesday.
‘We are trying hard to distribute all books within this month,’ he added.
This year, according to the NCTB, 40.15 crore copies of textbooks––62 lakh for pre-primary, 8.55 crore for primary, 30.81 crore for secondary and 1.92 lakh for national minority students —will be distributed among about four crore pre-primary, primary, secondary, secondary vocational, ibtedayi, dakhil vocational, and visually challenged students.
On this January 1, about 6 crore of the textbooks had been distributed among the students in upazilas.
Shaon Rahman, mother of a Class I student of South Point School and College, said that her daughter was yet to get any free textbooks.
Faruque Ahmed, father of a Class III student daughter and a Class X student son studying under the English version at Ideal School and College at Banasree branch, said that both of his children did not get any textbooks yet.
Dhaka district education officer Md Abdul Mazid said that till Wednesday they distributed three books each from Class VII to Class X, 11 books of Class VI and some books of madrassah version in some upazilas. Â
Rajshahi district education officer Md Abdul Aziz Sardar said that they had distributed three books of Class VI among all students in the district and later three books of Class VII and VIII among some students.
Both of the officers said that they were yet to get any books of English and technical education versions.
The education adviser, Wahiduddin Mahmud, on Tuesday said that he could not confirm when all students would get their textbooks in the current academic year.
He blamed delay in starting of the printing process, revisions of the books, changes in both the syllabus and curriculum, increase in the number of textbooks, and no printing of books abroad for the situation.
NCTB chairman Reazul Hassan mentioned that in 2024 the distribution of free textbooks completed on March 7, in 2023 on March 17, in 2022 on March 24, in 2019 on April 17, in 2018 on March 13, in 2017 on February 24, in 2016 on March 22, in 2010 on July 21 and in 2009 on September 26.
