A devastating accident on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Savar resulted in a fire engulfing an ambulance  and two buses, leaving four people dead.
The deceased are Mohammad Faruk Hossain, 50, headmaster of Bhabandatta Government Primary School at Ghatail in Tangail, his wife Mohsina Akhter, 35, their son Mohaymin Islam Fuad, 15, and Faruk’s sister-in-law Sima Akhter, 40.
All of them are residents of Bhabandatta village in Ghatail upazila and they were travelling in the ambulance.
All four family members died on the spot while seven more people were also injured in the incident. Â
The incident took place at about 2:00am on Thursday near Fulbaria Police Town area at Savar on the highway.
Citing family members, police said that deceased Fuad was suffering from a medical condition.
On Wednesday night, the family rented an ambulance and left for Dhaka for Fuad’s treatment.
As the ambulance reached the Savar area, a bus rammed it from behind, the police said.
The collision caused a gas cylinder in the ambulance to explode, leading to the devastating fire, the police said.
The flames quickly spread to another nearby bus.
The Savar fire service office dispatched two units to the scene, and after an effort of one hour and a half the blaze was brought under control.
‘We managed to extinguish the fire, and all three vehicles were severely burnt,’ said Meherul Islam, in-charge of the Savar Fire Service and Civil Defence station.
Four charred bodies were recovered from the site, he added.
‘The bodies were sent to the Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy,’ officer in-charge of Savar highway police Sawgatul Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
The officer said that the fire might have been originated from a gas cylinder explosion in the ambulance.
He also said that investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
