The Students Against Discrimination platform has established a July Uprising Cell to ensure medical care for the injured and to support the rehabilitation of the martyrs’ families, document the events of the July Uprising, expedite legal proceedings and advocate for the establishment of a martyrs’ memorial.
Member secretary of the movement Arif Sohel on Wednesday announced the committee for the new cell during a press conference held at the organisation’s central office at Banglamotor in the capital.
He accused the government of negligence on several issues, including inadequate support for the families of those injured and killed during the July uprising and lack of progress in prosecuting the perpetrators responsible for the violence.
Arif announced that Hasan Inam would serve as the secretary of the July Uprising Cell, overseeing four newly formed sub-cells under his leadership.
One of the sub-cells will ensure medical care and rehabilitation, another will document the July uprising, another will be formed with trainee lawyers to expedite legal proceedings, and the fourth will have a team to build martyrs memorials.
The platform will inform the public of the progress of work of the cells through monthly press conferences, said Arif.
He further said that the sub-cell responsible for ensuring medical care and supporting the families of the martyrs would visit hospitals to monitor the treatment of the injured, check on the well-being of the martyrs’ families and offer assistance to overcome difficulties.
The sub-cell would also identify the injured and martyrs of families who have not received financial aid and assist them in obtaining such support.
The team would coordinate with hospital authorities, health ministry and other state entities to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured, he said.
The documentation team would focus on collecting and compiling inspiring stories of courage from the injured of the July uprising.
The team of trainee lawyers would provide legal advice to victim families, assisting with filing of cases and expediting trial process.
Arif said that Students Against Discrimination would construct martyrs memorials at key sites of the movement nationwide.
While acknowledging that some initiatives had been undertaken by the interim government to support the uprising victims, he said that the efforts were significantly inadequate.
