Students Against Discrimination blocks Dhaka-Mawa Expressway

A leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s youth wing Juba Dal, who was snatched from police custody, was arrested on Saturday with three others in a case filed in connection with the snatching from the Srinagar police station in Munshiganj on Friday.

The BNP has suspended Jubo Dal Sringar upazila unit leader Tarikul Islam while police has withdrawn the Srinagar police officer-in-charge Qayyum Uddin Chowdhury in this regard.

Munshiganj police arrested them following the case filed by sub-inspector Abdur Razzak naming 31 members of the Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal, along with 201 unidentified individuals.

The Students Against Discrimination platform blocked the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Dhaleshwari Tall Plaza at around 10:00am for about an hour protesting at the snatching of the Juba Dal leader from police custody.

At around 11:00am, however, they withdrew the blockade after an assurance from the police about arrest of the accused people.

Traffic congestion was created on the highway due to the blockade causing sufferings to commuters.

Munshiganj superintendent of police Shamsul Alam Sarkar said, ‘We have arrested four people and the police station OC was also withdrawn,’ the SP added.

The accused included Upazila Jubo Dal convener Joynal Abedin Mridha, Member Secretary Mamunur Rashid, Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal convener Emdadul Haque, and Chhatra Dal President Ashraful Islam, among others.

Additionally, 160–170 unidentified BNP and affiliate organisation members have been named as suspects in the case. Police are conducting raids to apprehend all individuals involved.

Tarikul was detained on Friday in connection with a previous incident of violence.

More than 50 BNP leaders and activists gathered at the police station and pressured the police to release him.

When the police refused, they created a commotion and eventually snatched the accused from police custody.
