
Sacked trainee police sub-inspectors on Monday held a sit-in programme in front of the secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, in Dhaka, demanding reinstatement of their jobs.
They also announced a fast unto death programme from the sit-in programme.
They said that they were holding a peaceful demonstration in front of the secretariat as the government had assured them of accepting their demand by Sunday but it did not keep its word.
‘Earlier the home secretary had assured us of accepting our demand by January 12. But, we are yet to see any visible move from the government in this regard,’ said sacked 40-batch trainee SI Rubel Chandra Das.
He said that they would not leave the place until they got a fresh government’s assurance in this regard.
Later, sacked trainee SI Alamgir Hossain announced that they would hold a fast unto death programme to press home their demand for issuing a gazette notification reinstating their jobs.
‘We have been waiting for hours, but none from the government came here to talk to us. We will continue our fast unto death programme until we get any fresh assurance from the government,’ said Alamgir at a press conference.
Ensuring that they would not create any anarchy, he said that they had also hold peaceful demonstrations in front of the secretariat on January 5 and 6.
Nur Siddik, another sacked trainee SI, said that sacking them from the force after completing one year of training was a discrimination.
The sit-in programme began at about 9:00am and continued till filing the report at 9:30pm.
A sacked trainee SI told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a four-member team from the protesters went inside the secretariat for discussion, but the meeting was not fruitful.
On August 25 in 2024, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced a ban starting on August 26 on all kind of meetings, rallies, processions and protests near the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna and the secretariat.
DMP deputy commissioner (media and public relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that police were on alert in and around the secretariat area to prevent any untoward situation.
‘We are observing the situation and the sacked trainee SIs are holding their protest programme peacefully,’ Talebur added.
Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led mass uprising.
On October 21, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.
They were discharged 10 days before their graduation ceremony, scheduled to be held on October 31. The graduation ceremony, however, was deferred later.
