UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis on Tuesday said that they would meet every political party that they could think of in Bangladesh as the need assessment process began in terms of UN’s technical support to the election commission.

‘As many as possible...they [need assessment mission] will meet every political party we can think of in Bangladesh,’ she said after a meeting with foreign secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry.

The UNRC said that her colleagues would assess what made sense in terms of what the UN could offer.

Asked about BNP’s desire to have elections by the middle of this year, the UNRC said that the matter was really a decision to be taken by political parties and the government. ‘We are not touching on timelines…that’s really a decision of the government of professor Yunus and political parties to make.’
