Officials and employees of Rajshahi University on Wednesday observed their complete work abstention, demanding retaining the quota facility for their children in undergraduate admissions for the 2024-25 academic year.

They also observed a two-hour sit-in from 10:00am to 12 noon beside the university’s Syed Nazrul Islam Administration Building over their demand.

Addressing the sit-in, Moktar Hossain, acting president of RU Officer Association, said that a 5 per cent quota facility for their children in admissions was an ‘institutional benifit’.

‘RU authorities’ decision of abolishing the quota facility for our children in admissions is discriminatory as the same facility still exists at other universities and in the law enforcement agencies,’ he said, adding that they would continue their demonstrations until their demand was met.

Earlier on January 2, RU vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib declared abolishing the quota facility for the university teachers, officials, and employees for undergraduate admissions, about 12 hours after students had kept the university officials and employees confined inside the main academic building since morning.
