A physician of a hospital in the capital’s Dhanmondi area performed surgery to the right eye instead of the left one of one-and-a-half-year-old toddler Irtiza Ariz Hasan on Tuesday night.
Ophthalmologist and strabismus surgeon of Bangladesh Eye Hospital, Shahedara Begum, conducted the surgery as the parents of the patient came to the hospital to have their son treated after sensing the presence of a dirt-like object in the left eye.
Mahfuz Nafi, uncle of the patient, said that it happened for the negligence of the doctor who again operated on the left eye seeking apologies.
He said that Irtiza was brought to the hospital after sensing the presence of a dirt-like object in his left eye.
The doctor did necessary preparations and operated on the right eye.
When the toddler was brought out of the operating theatre, the parents noticed that the surgery was performed to the right eye instead of the left one.
Mother of the boy Fatima Tuz Zohora demanded punishment for the physician for her negligence.
Accused doctor Shahedara Begum admitted that she mistakenly performed the surgery to the right eye.
She said, ‘The surgery was conducted at the eleventh hour of the hospital time when I was exhausted and could not notice it.’
She also said that she removed an eyelash from the right eye.
Bangladesh Eye Hospital director professor Nazrul Islam said that it was a minor surgery.
Professor Nazrul, however, announced formation of a five-member probe committee to investigate the matter.
Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge Ali Ahmed Masud said that police would take legal action if the victim family filed a complaint.
