A Dhaka magistrate court on Thursday granted bail to Bangladesh Eye Hospital surgeon Shahedara Begum hours after her arrest by police for performing surgery to the right eye instead of the left one of one-and-a-half-year-old toddler Irtiza Ariz Hasan on Tuesday night.

Police arrested the accused ophthalmologist in the early hours of Thursday. 听

Metropolitan magistrate Masuma Rahman granted her bail on a bond of Tk 5000 on health ground, police inspector Asaduzzaman confirmed.

Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge Ali Ahmed Masud said that the doctor was taken into custody from her residence on Elephant Road at around 2:00am after the child鈥檚 father filed a case against her.

On Tuesday night, the physician of the hospital in the capital鈥檚 Dhanmondi area performed the surgery to the right eye instead of the left one.

The parents of the patient came to the hospital to have their son treated after sensing the presence of a dirt-like object in the left eye.

Mahfuz Nafi, uncle of the patient, said that it happened for negligence of the doctor who again operated on the left eye seeking apologies.

He said that when the toddler was brought out of the operating theatre, the parents noticed that the surgery was performed to the right eye instead of the left one.

Accused doctor Shahedara Begum admitted that she mistakenly performed the surgery to the right eye.
