Illegal sand lifters allegedly shot at a mobile court from a dredger extracting sand from an illegal sand quarry during a drive in the Meghna River in Raipur upazila of Narsingdi on Thursday.

The incident took place in the Meghna River in the remote Charmdhua area of the Raipur upazila at around 1:30pm on Thursday, said Raipur upazila nirbahi officer Masud Rana.


Upazila assistant commissioner for land Shafiqul Islam and executive magistrate of the court, Sajjad Parvez, conducted the drive in the Meghna River on information that sand was being extracted illegally at two points, said UNO Masud Rana.

At that time, a dredger was seized and two people were arrested and fined Tk 10 lakh for extracting sand from Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria.

Later, when the court went to another illegal sand quarry in the same area, one of the dredgers from five to six dredgers extracting sand there fired at the mobile court, the official said.

None was injured during the firing, the UNO confirmed.
