Initially, he concealed his affiliation but later admitted being a BCL central body deputy office secretary.
He also revealed that he was invited to the campus by Ahmad Ullah, a joint convener of the university’s Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
When Ahmad Ullah attempted to intervene and secure Shimul’s release, tensions escalated, leading to a heated exchange with other students.
The university’s proctorial team detained both Shimul and Ahmad before handing them over to the police.
JU proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam said that a mob was created over allegation of involvement of the BCL leader in the uprising. ‘We handed him over to the police following the demand of students.’
Officer in-charge of Ashulia police station Abu Bakor Siddik said that Ahmad Ullah was released while legal action was underway against Khan Shimul.
Anthropology department student Nazmul Islam said that it was unacceptable for a banned BCL leader to be on campus, especially under the guise of a JCD connection. ‘We expect organisational and legal actions against those involved.’
