Writers, researchers and poets said on Saturday that visual artist Debashish Chakrabarty portrayed bravery of people during the student-led mass uprising when the protesters were being killed by the ousted fascist Awami League government.
They also said that political art was treated as second-class art by the artist community and art critics although it created a huge impact on the people.
They made the statement at a discussion titled Bangladesher Art-Culture O Debashish Chakrabartyr Digital Drawing organised by the production department of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at the closing ceremony of the solo exhibition of Postare July Abhyuthan at its National Art Gallery.
Writer-researcher and poet Emrul Hasan presented the keynote paper while writer-researcher Tahmidal Zami and writer Rok Monu spoke at the event as speakers while BSA production department director Abdul Halim Chanchal chaired the discussion.
‘Political art is treated as secondary in the artist and critic community, but his artworks during the student-led mass uprising created a huge impact on social media,’ said Abdul Halim Chanchal.
Emrul Hasan said, ‘Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is a central character of art and culture of this Bengal because he spoke for people against the British colonialism while in visual art Zainul Abedin and SM Sultan created a huge impact on common people.’
‘Artists create bravery instead of rational thinking, fear of death, while our mainstream art fails to promote people’s rights,’ said Rok Monu.
Virtually joining the event, artist Debashish Chakrabarty said that Bangladeshi artists did not lack skills, but were ignorant about people’s aspirations. Â
