It acquits him of charges

The High Court on Monday overturned a 10-year jail sentence handed down to businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun by a lower court on July 7, 2007, for possessing illegal arms during the military-controlled caretaker government regime.

The arms were reportedly seized from his residence at Banani in the capital during a raid on March 26, 2007.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter delivered the verdict after allowing Mamun鈥檚 appeal to quash the lower court鈥檚 decision.

The High Court also acquitted Mamun of the charges, observing that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mamun, who faced over 19 cases involving charges of extortion, corruption, illegal arms possession, and tax evasion, was released from prison on bail following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, in the face of a student-led mass uprising.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Mamun on March 26, 2007, and reportedly recovered a revolver from his Banani residence during the operation.

Mamun鈥檚 lawyer Sayeed Ahmed Raza contended that Mamun had remained untraced since his arrest in the New Paltan area on January 31, 2007, during the military-controlled caretaker government.

The RAB, however, declared him arrested on March 26, 2007 after the revolver was seized at his Banani residence and produced him before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on the following day.聽聽
