Tanzid Hasan smashed an unbeaten 90 runs off 54 balls to keep Dhaka Capitals afloat as they beat Chittagong Kings by eight wickets in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.Â
Chittagong, after opting to bat first, crawled to 148-6 from 20 overs as the bowlers kept things tight. Then, Dhaka chased that down with 11 balls remaining to bag their third win in 10 matches.Â
Chittagong made a slow start as they added only 30 runs in the powerplay. Opener Naeem Islam top-scored with 44 runs but played 40 balls. The middle or late-middle order couldn’t flourish either, as the last five overs yielded just 37 runs.Â
The spin duo Mosaddek Hossain and Nazmul Islam each took two wickets for Chittagong.Â
In reply, a 75-run opening partnership between Tanzid and Liton (25 off 28) laid a strong foundation for Dhaka.
Tanzid, who reached his fifty in 28 balls, then finished things off with the help of Munim Shahriar (12 off 18) and Sabbir Rahman (14* off 9).Â
Tanzid hit seven sixes in his innings to bring his tally of sixes in this BPL to 29—the highest for any Bangladeshi batter in a single edition of this tournament.Â
Only Chris Gayle is ahead of him in the overall chart with 47 sixes.Â
If Dhaka reach the playoffs, then Tanzid will have a good shot at breaking that record too. However, the left-hander doesn’t want to think about anything apart from the last two matches.Â
‘I don’t think like that,’ said Tanzid after the match. ‘We’ve got two matches ahead. Our focus will be on finishing these two matches well. If that [record] happens, so be it. I will be playing according to my plan.’Â
Dhaka were in fourth in the table after the win, having played out 10 matches. The win confirmed that they have had a slim chance of reaching the last four.Â
Tanzid, though, mentioned that they didn’t want to keep themselves under pressure by bringing the equation to the table.Â
‘We’re not focusing on the points table either, as our starting wasn’t good. Now we will only try to finish these two games well’, said the 24-year-old.
