The ongoing mild cold wave might continue two more days with forecasts of a fall in temperature across the country through tomorrow, predicted the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Friday.

Ferry service between Paturia and Daulatdia remained suspended for nine hours on Friday due to poor visibility as dense fog blanketed the river bed, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Manikganj.

This could be the last cold wave of this winter season, the BMD said, adding that warm days were likely to follow the cold wave with a rise in temperature from January 27.

‘The rise in temperature might continue through February 3,’ said meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque.

The feeling of cold, however, might return for a brief period due to occurrences of fog, he said, adding that the minimum temperature might not drop below 10C.

On Friday, Bangladesh’s lowest minimum temperature of 9.6C was recorded in Baghabari of Rajshahi.

A cold wave occurs when the temperature drops below 10C.

A mild cold wave swept over Sirajganj and Panchagarh on Friday.

The BMD said that moderate to thick fog might continue to occur, particularly along rivers, in morning hours but their prevalence might reduce with temperature rising.

On Friday, Bangladesh’s highest maximum temperature of 31.2C was recorded in Teknaf.

Paturia Ghat BIWTA office deputy general manager Nasir Mahmud Chowdhury said that the ferry movement was suspended at 1.30am on Friday.

At that time five ferries — Bonolota, Shah Enayetpuri, Faridpuri, Shah Poran and Gouroi — remained stranded at the Paturia Ghat while three other ferries — Beer Shreshtha Jahangir, Beer Shreshtha Ruhul Amin and Hasna Hena — remained stuck at the Daulatdia Ghat.

Two other ferries — Shaheed Borkot and Kopoti — were anchored in the middle of the River Padma at that time.

The temperature observations from Bangladesh showed a clear climate signal, with fewer and shorter cold waves in recent decades, said the BMD report titled ‘Changing climate of Bangladesh’, released in February past year.

Historically, cold waves were frequent in January and February, but in recent years the end of February had been without any, the report said about Rangpur, the coldest area.

Cold had become concentrated in January lately. But this year, even January appeared far warmer than expected.
