Adviser to the interim government Mahfuj Alam on Saturday said that the Awami League in no way would be allowed in the next general election as it might help bring back the fascism in the country’s politics.
‘The Awami League on no account will be allowed to participate in the next general election. If the party get chance to contest in the poll, it will help fascism come back again,’ he said in a meeting at Hajiganj upazila in Chandpur.
‘In 1975, Sheikh Mujib established BAKSAL and attempted to thwart all democratic movements in Bangladesh. Prior to the establishment of BAKSAL, he enforced thousands of opposition leaders to disappear,’ Mahfij Alam said.
The adviser added that at that time, thousands of people were forcibly disappeared, murdered and women were raped by the Awami League activists.
‘Therefore, we want the rule of Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina never come back in Bangladesh.’
Mahfuj Alam prayed for salvation of the departed soul of four martyrs in Hajiganj who were killed during the anti-discrimination movement.
He also reiterated his government’s commitment to try the murderers, reform the institutions those were destroyed during Hasina regime, and hold a fair election for democratic transition.
Pointing out the oppression of Awami League for 16 years on the people, Mahfuj said that children were forcibly disappeared, mothers and sisters were raped, many people were killed and thousands were made physically crippled.
The adviser said that all political organisations, student organisations, and religious leaders through their united movement dislodged fascist Hasina.
‘Next poll will not be meaningful without reforming the institutions which were instrumental for Hasina government to persecute people. Those institutions will remain corrupt and fragile without necessary reforms, and thus the country will never be free from discrimination,’ he said.
Mahfuj said that the interim government would discuss with the political parties and stakeholders on the reports of the reform commissions to chalk out minimum reform and on that basis an election would be held for transition of power democratically.
Earlier, a procession was brought out on Hajiganj-Shahrasti road, welcoming Mahfuj Alam. Upon his arrival, the adviser was warmly received by the leaders of local unit of Nagorik Committee, Anti-discrimination Student Movement, Islamic Andolan and cross section of people.
