Bangla Academy on Saturday suspended the list of winners of the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2024 amid controversies.

The academy had announced the list of 10 winners of the award in different categories on January 23.

In a notice signed by Bangla Academy director general Mohammad Azam, the academy on Saturday announced the suspension of the list.

The notice said that a meeting of the Bangla Academy Literary Award Committee 2024 was held at the academy on Saturday evening regarding the reconsideration of the recently announced list of winners of the award as certain allegations raised against some individuals listed for the award.

It was decided that the academy should investigate the allegations raised, said the notice.

‘In this situation, the previously announced list for the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2024 has been suspended. The revised list will be published within three working days after reconsideration,’ said the notice.

Bangla Academy director general Mohammad Azam refused to make any comments to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on the issue.

The winner list of the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2024 drew criticisms from litterateurs.

A group of writers under the platform Jatiya Sangskritik Biplab on Saturday afternoon announced that they would lay siege to the academy today morning, demanding cancellation of the list and making the academy free from the accomplices of fascism.

One of the organisers of the programme, writer Abid Azam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that that a number of the winners on the list were the accomplices and beneficiaries of the ousted fascist regime.

He said that though the academy suspended the list amid criticisms and protests, the siege programme would be held to make the academy free from the accomplices of the fascist regime.

The 10 litterateurs named in the list as the winners of the prestigious award included Masud Khan in the poetry category, Selim Morshed in fiction, Shuvashis Sinha in drama and dramatic literature, Salimullah Khan in essay/prose, Faruk Nawaz in children’s literature, GH Habib in translation, Muhammad Shahjahan Mian in research, Rezaur Rahman in science, Muhammad Hannan in the War of Independence and Syed Jamil Ahmed in folklore.

Introduced in 1960, the Bangla Academy Literary Award is annually given to individuals for their contribution to Bangla literature in different categories.
