Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma has said that Delhi would continue to seek a stable, positive, constructive, forward-looking and mutually beneficial relationship with Dhaka in which people were the main stakeholders.Â
Addressing a reception marking the 76th Republic Day of India at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday, he said that India had and would continue to support a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.
He said that they strongly believed that their partnership must benefit the common people on both sides.Â
Pranay said that they would remain confident that the reality of their cultural and societal connections and the logic of their interdependence and mutual benefit would keep guiding the relationship between the two countries forward.
‘As we gather to celebrate India’s 76th Republic Day, we look at our long-standing relations with Bangladesh with great importance and wish the people of Bangladesh well on their journey ahead,’ the envoy said on the occasion.
Adviser for planning and education of the interim government Wahiduddin Mahmud, law adviser Asif Nazrul, leaders from different political parties, government officials, foreign envoys, civil society members, business leaders and journalists, among others, attended the event.
Pranay said that as two aspirational societies, there was so much that they could offer to each other, and to our region, when we work together, transforming our geographical proximity into new opportunities.
Seventy-five years ago, on January 26, 1950, the people of an independent India through their Constituent Assembly gave themselves a constitution and declared India a sovereign republic, he said about the Republic Day celebrated nationally by India.
These 76 years have been an extraordinary journey for India from the throes of impoverishment to a modern capable nation playing an increasingly important role in the progress of humanity and offering solutions to global challenges, he said.
And, in this journey, Bangladesh has been an important partner for us, joined by shared history and geography linked by common language, culture and traditions and connected emotionally by the shared sacrifices of the Liberation War, he added.
