
At least five people out of the six arrested in connection with the hacking of a trader on Elephant Road in the capital Dhaka on January 10 had links to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party politics, police officials said.
Of the six arrested, only Md Emanul Haque alias Murgi Enamul, 26, has no connection with the BNP politics, they said.
The police officials involved in the investigation of the hacking case said that of the five people linked to the BNP, three Asifur Rahman Jhantu, 32, Md Kawser Mridha, 24, and Md Arafat Ahmed, 34, were BNP activists and the remaining two — Mohammad Hossain Mithun, 35, and Md Riazul Hasan Rasel, were leaders of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal, the student wing of the BNP.
Arafat is a friend of Riazul, the officials said.
On January 24, the JCD expelled its central committee joint general secretary Mohammad Hossain Mithun and assistant general secretary Md Riazul Hasan Rasel for breaching organisational discipline after an attack on police at the New Market police station.
New Market police station sub-inspector Md Baizid Bostami, also the investigation officer of the case, said that all of them were arrested between January 12 and January 23 and all of them were now landed in jail after placing one or two day remands in police custody.
Md Wahidul Islam Dipu, senior joint general secretary of the ECS Computer City, popularly known as the Multiplan Centre, had filed the case with the New Market police station, naming 11 people, including Sanjidul Islam Emon, a listed criminal, on January 11 following the hacking incident.
The case also accused 20–25 unnamed individuals.
Plaintiff Wahidul, elder brother of a man going by the name Pichhi Helal who is also a listed criminal, in the case document said that Sanjidul launched the attack.
New Market police station officer-in-charge Md Mohsin Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were investigating the case and trying to arrest the other suspects involved in the incident.
On January 24, five police personnel, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police New Market zone assistant commissioner Tarik Latif, sustained injuries as Mohammad Hossain Mithun’s followers attacked police at the New Market police station to snatch their arrested leader.
The attack took place at about 4:10am when police brought Mithun to the police station after arresting him from the city’s 300-Feet area over the hacking incident.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said that since he was not aware of the incidents, he would not make any comments.
New Market police station sub-inspector Omar Faruk filed a case against 13 named and 30–35 unnamed persons accusing them of the attack on police on January 24.
Police arrested six people — Md Bashir Islam, 21, Md Hasan, 21, Md Emon, 25, Md Masum Mahmud, 32, Md Al Amin, 30, and Md Akbar Ali, 21 — in connection with the attack on police.
Bashir and Mithun were placed on one-day remand in the police attack case.
New Market police station OC Md Mohsin Uddin said that they had identified the attackers after analysing CCTV footage and efforts were underway to arrest the other accused.
The OC claimed that Mithun had informed his followers to snatch him from the police station by attacking police.
