The First Division cricket league, originally scheduled to start on January 20, will now commence on January 30 after being derailed due to the Dhaka-based clubs’ protest over the proposed amendment to the constitution of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The Dhaka clubs’ protested over the BCB’s decision to reduce the number of councillors and board directors representing them.
After meeting the club representatives who were leading the protest, the chairman of the CCDM, Salahuddin Chowdhury, informed the reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium that the trophy unveiling would happen on Tuesday.
‘The decision we’ve taken is that we’re starting the league. Tomorrow [today] the trophy unveiling will be held as well as the umpires’ and players’ briefing. The league will start on Thursday, January 30,’ said Salahuddin on Monday.
The decision was followed by an announcement from the BCB, stating that the activities of the constitution reform committee, led by Nazmul Abedin Fahim, were suspended.
The clubs also called for the committee’s dissolution and termination of Fahim from his position.
Rafiqul Islam Babu, a club organiser, thanked BCB for taking the steps.
‘You know that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has suspended the committee. That means they dissolved it,’ said Babu.
‘At the same time, the proposed amendments have also been terminated. For taking the decisions quickly, BCB has done something to be given thanks to.’
He also announced the proposed formation of the committee, which, according to the BCB, ‘will be changed and expanded later.’
‘We want representatives from the clubs, players, umpires, and the BCB. We also want to increase the number of board directors from the clubs to 16 from 12. Now it’s up to the BCB,’ added Babu.
