A 34-year-old Bangladeshi man was hacked to death by a group of Indians by entering Bangladesh territory in the Eolachhara area under Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar Sunday afternoon.

The deceased is Ahad Ali, 34, of the Eolachhara Bosti area under Kulaura upazila.

Ahad’s wife, Jamirunnesha, filed a case with Kulaura Police Station midnight past Sunday, Kulaura police station officer-in-charge Md Golam Afsar said.

‘We heard that the attackers were Indian nationals,’ he added.

Sylvester Pathang, a member of the local ward number 3 of Karmadha Union Parishad, said that Ahad was hacked by Indian nationals inside Bangladesh territory. ‘The place is five yards away from the Bangladesh-India international border.’

Quoting local people, he said that the attackers were relatives of his in-laws and there was a land-related dispute between Ahad and the attackers.

Kulaura police station sub-inspector Md Farhad said that the case was filed against seven people, including Indian national Haider Ali.

According to police and local people, a part of Ahad Ali’s land fell in the Indian side’s no man’s land after setting up a barbed wire fence by India along the border.

Indian national Haider Ali took the land on lease but paid no money.

On Sunday afternoon, Ahad and Haider locked in an altercation centring the matter and, at one stage, Ahad and his associates entered Bangladesh territory, hacked Ahad indiscriminately, and returned to Indian territory.

Locals rescued Ahad and rushed him to Kulaura Health Complex from where he was shifted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet where doctors declared him dead in the evening, the police and locals said.

Border Guard Bangladesh officials could not be reached for comments.
