The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday said that six people were arrested in connection with an attack on officials from the Department of Environment during a drive at an illegal polythene factory in Dhaka’s Chawk Bazar area on Sunday.

The arrested are Md Humayun Kabir, 28, Md Ariful Islam 40, Anwar Hossain Khokon 48, Md Shahabuddin 45, Md Nazmul Alam Ujjal 36, and Md Sumon 26.


The arrests were made on Monday and Tuesday through joint operations in the Chawk Bazar area by the DMP Detective Branch and Chawk Bazar police, said a DMP press release on Tuesday.

On January 26, an executive magistrate of the environment department, Faizunnessa Akter, led a mobile court operation against polythene in the Chawk Bazar area with the assistance of the police and Rapid Action Battalion.

At least 40 sacks of polythene were seized from a rented house belonging to Kabir Hossain and Ilyas Sardar in West Islambagh during the operation.

Later, when the seized items were being loaded onto a pickup truck, 150–200 people attacked the team with sticks, bricks, and iron rods, according to the press release.

The director of monitoring and enforcement wing of the department Md Shawkat Ali was seriously injured in the incident and currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The attackers also forcibly snatched the seized polythene, the press release said.

Following the incident, DoE inspector Md Motaher Hossain filed a case with the Chawk Bazar model police station.
