
A man who was critically injured in a clash between the followers of two Tabligh-e-Jamaat factions leaders- Maulana Zubair Ahmed and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, in Gazipur’s Tongi on December 18 last year, died while undergoing treatment at a city hospital early Tuesday.
With this, the total death toll in the clash over taking control of the Bishwa Ijtema ground rose to five.
The deceased is Mizanur Rahman, 47, a resident of Fulbaria village in Kurigram, said Md Sayem, media coordinator of the Maulana Saad group.
He said that Mizanur was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after he was critically injured in the December 18 incident.
‘He died at about 2:00am while undergoing treatment at the hospital. He was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit for a month and twelve days,’ he said.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at Saad followers’ Markaz Mosque in the Tongi Paschim Par area at about 4:00pm, he said, adding that his body was taken to his village in Kurigram for burial.
‘The process of filing a case in this regard is under way,’ added Sayem.
Earlier, four people were killed and scores injured in a clash between two factions of the Tabligh-e-Jamaat over the control of the Ijtema ground at Tongi in Gazipur at about 3:30am on December 18.
As per the government decision, the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema, organised by Zubair’s followers, will be held from January 31 to February 2, and the second phase, organised by Saad followers, will be held from February 7 to 9.
