Govt to launch rice OMS at Tk 30/kg from Feb 1

The advisers’ council committee on economic affairs on Tuesday approved in principle a proposal to start selling commodities among the common consumers through truck in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.


The approval came from the 4th meeting of the ACCEA in this year at the cabinet division conference room at secretariat, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed chaired the meeting.

United News of Bangladesh reported that the government would start open market sale of rice at Tk 30 per kg from February 1 across the country, ahead of Ramadan.

Food ministry issued a notice in this regard on Tuesday.

The government took the decision to ensure rice at an affordable price for low-income people at the upazila level.

Rice will be sold through OMS at a rate of 3 metric tonnes per day in each of the 401 upazilas across 61 districts and 1 metric tonne per day in each of the 23 upazilas in 3 hill districts, covering 424 upazilas through 848 distribution centres, according to the notice.

Besides, under the OMS (General) programme, 1 metric tonne rice will be sold daily in 906 centres in Dhaka metropolitan area, district municipalities, 8 city corporations, and 4 labour-intensive districts - Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, and Gazipur.
