Different organisations, including the Bangladesh Football Federation and rights bodies on Wednesday slammed Tuesday’s attacks over women’s football matches in Jaipurhat and Dinajpur districts.

They urged the government to ensure punishment for the perpetrators involved in the attacks through fair investigation and to create an environment for women to play football freely.

On Tuesday afternoon, at least four people were injured in a clash between two groups over a Women’s football match at the Bawna area near Hilli, a bordering area under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rangpur reported.

The tournament remained suspended following the incident, according to the police.

On information, Hamimpur upazila nirbahi officer Amit Ray and Hakimpur police station officer-in-charge Sujon Miah rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Amit Ray said the two groups locked in a clash over the football match.

He claimed that no footballer was injured in the incident.

In another incident on Tuesday, local people, madrassah teachers and students vandalised tin-made fences on Tilakpur High School playground under Akkelpur upazila in Jaipurhat, a day before the scheduled match for women football players, Jaipurhat district superintendent of police Muhammad Abdul Wahab said.

‘The club authorities neither informed the upazila administration nor the police about organising the match. No complaint was filed in this regard so far,’ he said on Wednesday.

Akkelpur upazila nirbahi officer Monjurul Alam said that it was a matter of suspicion that the Three Star Club authorities announced the match for Wednesday without informing the administration as the organisers and those opposing the match were scheduled to come to meet with the upazila administration at 11:00am on Wednesday.

At a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday, chief adviser’s deputy press secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said that they had noticed the incidents and directed the local administrations to take necessary actions.

The Bangladesh Football Federation in a statement on Wednesday said that the organisation did not support the vandalism of tin fences at Tilakpur High School ground in Jaipurhat in a bid to foil the women’s football match.

It also urged the administration to take immediate action against the attackers and ensure a suitable environment for women footballers.

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust demanded punishment of the attackers.

It also demanded to ensure proper treatment for the injured people, including women footballers.

Socialist Women’s Forum president Shampa Basu and general secretary Dilruba Nuri in a joint statement protested at the attack.

The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and the Bangladesh Chhatra Union in separate statements also condemned the attack and demanded punishment for the attackers.
