Two girls– an eight-year-old one and her 16-year-old speech-impaired sister were raped reportedly by their neighbour at their rented house in Gopalbagh’s Boubazar area in the capital’s Jatrabari on Wednesday night.
Confirming the matter, Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge Md Kamruzzaman Talukdar said on Thursday that the incident took place at about 10:00pm on Wednesday when the victims’ parents were out of the house.
‘Family of the victims filed a case in connection with the incident on Thursday. We have arrested the only accused, Rezaul Karim, 50,’ he said.
Victims’ mother said that they lived in a rented house on the ground floor of a building in the Boubazar area and accused Rezaul Karim lived next-door to them.
‘My husband was not at home at that time and I was also out as I have a roadside shop where I sell pitha,’ she said.
‘Rezaul took the opportunity as my daughters were alone in the house,’ she alleged, adding that Rezaul forcibly entered the house and raped them.
‘Hearing the screams of the victims, the people around rushed to the house, detained Karim and informed the police. After getting the news, I came home and took them to the hospital,’ she said.
The victims were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s One-Stop Crisis Centre at about 12:30am on Thursday, said Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
