Leaders of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council on Thursday urged the interim government to take action against ongoing attacks on religious minorities across Bangladesh.
Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club, BHBCUC acting general secretary Monindra Kumar Nath said that religious minorities had been under attack since August 5, following the fall of the Awami League government.
He acknowledged that the interim government had taken steps to control the violence, filing 88 cases and arresting 70 attackers. However, he stated that attacks were still continuing.
Monindra Nath demanded the immediate release of arrested ISKCON leader Chinmoy Das and other detained religious minority members.
He also called for the withdrawal of cases filed against BHBCUC general secretary Rana Dasgupta and others.
Expressing concern over the proposed removal of secularism from the reformed constitution, BHBCUC leaders urged the interim government to enact laws protecting religious minorities, establish a national minority commission, and form a separate ministry dedicated to minority affairs.
BHBCUC presidents Neem Chandra Bhowmik, Ushaton Talukder, and Nirmal Rozario, along with central leaders Dipankar Ghosh, Sunanda Priyo Bhikkhu, and others, attended the press conference.
