People suffered immensely on Thursday as the students of Government Titumir College and Dania University College block roads in Mohakhali and Jatrabari areas pressing for their separate demands.

Students of Titumir College blocked both sides of the road in front of the college demanding that the government upgrade the institution to an independent university.

The students of Titumir College also demanded resignation of the college principal.

About three hundred students blocked the road at about 9:00am and continued their programme for more than 12 hours to press for their demands.

The blockade continued till filing the report at about 9:00pm.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Gulshan Division additional deputy commissioner for traffic Ziaur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the students did not allow any vehicles on both sides of the roads.

‘We have diverted vehicles to other roads and people suffered,’ Ziaur said, adding that people in the Amtali area of Mohakhali to Gulshan-1 suffered the most.

At about 5:00pm on Wednesday, students began an indefinite hunger strike and put forward their seven demands under the banner of Titumir Oikya.

Asked about the development of the student protest, Titumir College principal Shipra Rani Mondal said that she was holding a meeting with the student representatives to resolve the problem.

On Monday, Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan said that the university authorities had decided to cancel the affiliation of seven colleges, including Titumir College, following the overnight clashes between the university students and the students of the colleges in the capital.

He said that DU authorities would be responsible for only those students of the colleges, who are now under the university’s academic programme.

Students of Dania University College at Jatrabari, meanwhile, blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on the day in the Jatrabari area for half an hour demanding ensuring justice for the killing of engineer Minhazul Islam in Khulna by the activists of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League.

Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge Mohamamd Kamruzzman Talukder said that they blocked the highway at about 2:00pm and continued their protest for half an hour.

‘The blockade also triggered traffic congestion in the area,’ the OC added.

In a separate incident, sacked police members during the Awami League regime and their families blocked road in front the Shiksha Bhaban in Dhaka city on the day, demanding the reinstatement of their jobs with all benefits restored.
