The advisory council of the interim government on Thursday decided to review the application of the quota system in government jobs and admissions to educational institutions.
The relevant ministries will conduct the review and take subsequent actions in this regard as per the decision, according to a Cabinet Division press release.
The decision was made at a meeting of the advisory council on Thursday at the Chief Adviser Office at Tejgaon in the capital Dhaka with chief adviser Muhammad Yunus in the chair.
After the meeting, the Cabinet Division in the release said that the health and family welfare, education, law and justice, and liberation war affairs ministries would take necessary actions regarding the medical college admission quota.
Besides, the Secondary and Higher Education Division will present a summary with opinions and recommendations on the application of the quota system in admissions to educational institutions.
The public administration ministry will also present a summary with opinions and recommendations on the application of the quota system in government job recruitments, said the release.
The quota reform became a major issue in 2024 when students across the country staged protests demanding changes in the quota system that led to a student-led mass uprising forcing the ouster of the Awami League government on August 5.
Following these protests, the Supreme Court issued a ruling on the matter. As per the court鈥檚 ruling, currently 93 per cent of government, semi-government, and autonomous institution jobs is filled based on merit, while the remaining 7 per cent is filled through a quota system.
Of the 7 per cent, 5 per cent is reserved for the children of freedom fighters, martyrs and Biranganas, 1 per cent for national minorities and 1 per cent for people with disabilities and transgender people.
Additionally, in medical and dental college admissions, as well as related units, 5 per cent of seats is reserved for the children of freedom fighters, martyrs and Biranganas.
This issue has drawn public attention following the release of the results for medical college admissions recently.
