The government on Thursday ordered the district administrations of Dinajpur and Jaipurhat to take necessary steps to begin the women’s football matches that remained suspended after Tuesday’s attacks.

The Chief Adviser’s Office made the order to the district administrations, according to a statement issued by the chief adviser’s press wing on Thursday.

The district administrations, however, said that  they were yet to set any date to hold the matches and that no case was filed in connection with the attacks until Thursday evening.

On Thursday, students of Jahangirnagar University as well as different organisations condemned the attack and urged the government to create a suitable environment for girls and women to hold their recreational activities.

Referring to the attacks in Jaipurhat and Dinajpur districts, the statement by the chief adviser’s press wing said, ‘The Interim Government is deeply concerned by reports of incidents of women being prevented from engaging in recreational activities.’

‘Anyone who imposes their restrictions on girls and women in violation of their rights will be held accountable for their actions according to the laws of Bangladesh,’ the statement said.

It said that the government specifically condemned the actions of hooligans who had forcefully disrupted girls’ football matches.

‘Women are equal citizens of Bangladesh and enjoy the same human and civil rights as men. The IG is doing everything in his power to ensure that they enjoy their full rights as Bangladeshi citizens,’ said the statement.

Local people, madrassah teachers and students vandalised tin-made fences on Tilakpur High School playground under Akkelpur upazila in Jaipurhat Tuesday afternoon, a day before the scheduled match for women footballers.

Jaipurhat deputy commissioner Afroja Aktar Chowdhury said that no date was fixed for organising the stalled football match.

‘We have formed a five-member committee headed by additional deputy commissioner (general) Bipul Kumar. The committee was asked to submit its report by Sunday,’ the DC added.

She said that no case was filed in this connection.

In another incident on Tuesday afternoon, at least four people were injured in a clash between two groups over women’s football match at the Bawna area near Hilli, a bordering area under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur.

The tournament remained suspended following the incident, according to the police.

Hakimpur upazila nirbahi officer Amit Roy said that no date was fixed for the stalled women’s football match.

‘We are yet to get any directive from the district administration,’ the UNO added.

Jahangirnagar University students demonstrated on the campus on Thursday, protesting against the vandalism and the cancellation of women’s football matchs, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent at JU reported.

The protesters brought out a procession from the university’s central Shaheed Minar area at about 12:30pm.

The procession ended in a brief rally at the same location after parading different roads on the campus.

Rights organization Ain O Salish Kendra in a statement on Thursday condemned the attack.
