Leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance on Sunday urged the interim government to announce a roadmap for the next general elections as soon as possible.

LDA, a combine of six left political parties, organised the rally in front of the National Press Club, where its coordinator and general secretary of Revolutionary Communist League Iqbal Kabir Jahid chaired.

Criticising the government’s failure to control soaring prices of essential commodities, Iqbal Kabir condemned the imposition of value-added tax on over 100 items, which had worsened public sufferings.

‘We demand an election roadmap for a free, fair, and credible vote at the earliest,’ he stated.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz accused the interim government of failing to uphold the ideals of the July student and people’s revolution, saying that it had lost legitimacy to remain in power more.

Communist Party of Bangladesh presidium member Shahin Rahman asserted that the public would reject any political party formed under the interim government’s patronage.

Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu condemned the alleged custodial killing of a Juba Dal leader in Cumilla and demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible.

SPB (Marxist) coordinator Masud Rana emphasised that the people were eagerly awaiting their right to vote in a genuinely free and fair election.

Bangladesher Samajtantrik Andolan executive president Abdul Ali urged the government to withdraw the additional VAT on essential goods.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
