
People suffered immensely on roads in the capital throughout Sunday as traffic congestion occurred across the city due to road blockades by the students and injured July mass uprising victims and the end of the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema.
Passengers and transport workers endured immense suffering on different roads while the sick and elderly people and children suffered the most.
The students of Government Titumir College blocked two roads in the Mohakhali area at different times of the day which created traffic gridlock in the adjacent areas.
A group of July-August mass uprising victims blocked roads in the Shymoli area from Saturday evening to Sunday evening. It caused traffic congestion in the area.
As the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema ended in the morning, the number of people and vehicles transporting the home goers was higher than the normal days.
Huge traffic congestion was seen in the areas including Mohakhali, Banani, Gulshan, Uttara, Rampura, Shymoli, Agargaon, Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Tejgaon, Shahbagh, Gulistan and Motijheel areas.
The students of Government Titumir College blocked the the Bir Uttam AK Khandaker Road (Mohakhali-Gulshan road) in front of the college at about 12:00 noon for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday demanding the transformation of the college into an independent university.
Later in the evening, they blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway鈥檚 Amtoli point in the Mohakhali area at about 6:30pm and left the road at about 8:30pm.
Some injured mass uprising victims, including those undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and the National Institute of Opthalmology and Hospital, blocked the roads in front of the NITOR and NIOH at around 7:00pm on Saturday demanding proper medical treatment and rehabilitation and stayed there for the entire night.
Later they blocked both sides of the Mirpur Road at about 11:00am on Sunday, causing a massive traffic gridlock in all the adjacent areas, said Mohammadpur Patrol inspector Md Imran.聽聽
They withdrew their blockade at about 7:00pm and went to the official residence of chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Due to the police barricade, they stopped near the InterContinental Dhaka Hotel.
They were seen protesting there till filing this report at 10:00pm.聽
Inquilab Mancha, a platform supporting the mass uprising, at about 3:00pm on Sunday, went towards the secretariat demanding the resignation of the home affairs adviser for his failure to provide justice over the mass killings.
Police obstructed them near the Shikkha Bhaban by putting a barricade.
United News of Bangladesh reported that the three-day first phase of the 58th version of the Biswa Ijtema ended through akheri munajat (final prayer) on the banks of the River Turag in Gazipur on Sunday.
After the prayers, a huge rush was seen on the by-roads and train tracks as the devotees started heading towards their destinations in parts of the country.
