
At least six police personnel were injured and one vehicle was vandalised in an attack by Awami League activists at Tungipara in Gopalganj on Sunday evening.
The incident took place at about 7:30pm on Sunday when the police tried to prevent between 300 and 400 AL leaders and activists from distributing leaflets, according to the police officials.
‘Five to six personnel were injured in the attack launched by Awami League men. They also vandalised a police vehicle,’ the Gopalganj superintendent of the police Md Mizanur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
He said the police filed a case naming 105 and between 300 and 350 unnamed people with the Tungipara police station over the attack on Monday morning.
Shafayet Gazi, an activist of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, from Tungipara village was shown arrested in the case.
The SP said that the injured police personnel took primary treatment at a hospital.
The AL and its associate bodies are distributing leaflets in Dhaka and other places in the country as part of its month-long programme demanding the resignation of chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
According to witnesses, Tungipara police station was guarded by security forces, including armoured personnel carriers.
Tungipara police station officer-in-charge Md Khorshed Alam said that the army had increased patrols in the area as part of their work.
‘A joint drive is under way to arrest the other attackers. Now, the situation has returned to normalcy,’ he added.
The AL which was ousted from power amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024 announced the month-long protest programme at a time when most of the party’s senior leaders are either in jail or in hiding.
Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took oath on August 8 days after the party president fled to India on August 5 and took shelter for safety.
