Member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, Professor Masuma Habib, at a workshop in Dhaka on Tuesday said that the UGC would take initiatives to protect the intellectual property rights of university teachers in research and innovation.

In this regard, an initiative would be taken to establish a cell at the UGC soon, she said.


The workshop was organised by the commission’s research and grants management division to evaluate the research project proposals received in the 2023-2024 financial year in the business studies sub-branch under the arts and social sciences research branch at the UGC, said a press release.

Speaking as chief guest, Masuma Habib said that there was no alternative to preserving research and innovation in implementing the spirit of the July-August mass uprising.  ‘Initiatives will be taken to preserve the research information of the country’s universities through digital means.’

In addition, the issue of providing financial support for publishing research in international journals is under active consideration by the UGC, she mentioned, adding that researchers would be given special incentives to obtain patents in research.

At the meeting, Bangladesh Public Service Commission member Professor Chowdhury Saima Ferdous, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University vice-chancellor Professor Mohd Hasanat Ali, Dhaka University treasurer Professor Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Professor Mohammad Helal Uddin, Professor Md Shahidul Islam, Professor Md Maksudur Rahman Sarkar, Professor Shakila Yasmin, Rajshahi University professor Md Atiqul Islam, Jahangirnagar University professor Irin Akhter, associate professors Momtaz Akhter and Abu Saif Md Muntakimul Bari Chowdhury, Jagannath University professor Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Md Khairul Islam were present as the relevant members.

The seminar was presided over by UGC director for research and grants management Ferdous Zaman and moderated by Md Shaheen Siraj, additional director of the department.
