Writers, researchers, academics and Islamic scholars on Wednesday stressed revisions to Islamic studies textbooks for primary- and secondary-level education.
They said that the Quran and information-based subjects would be helpful for children and the future generation to become educated in real Islamic education.
They made the remarks at the launching ceremony of the book titled ‘Prathomik o Madhyomik Store Kemon Howa Chai Islam Shikkha Patyapustak’ jointly written by Abu Sayed Khan and Shawkat Zawhar.
Saralrekha Prokasona Sangstha published the book.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan along with writers and invited speakers unveiled the book at the launching ceremony organised by the Quran Path Andalan.
The reflection of Islamic thoughts in textbooks is important, Niaz said.
Children should be informed about Islamic morality and the balanced approach to life and after life to make them good human beings, he said.
Zawhar said that the existing Islamic studies textbooks of primary- and secondary-level education had several errors and baseless information that were inconsistent with the Quran.
The writers have tried to point out those issues and suggested possible reforms in the book, added Zawhar.
Bangladesh Open University founding VC Shamsher Ali as chief guest said that children could be educated morality and ethics through religious education and the Islamic textbooks should be focused on those.
Education researcher Rakhal Raha said that there were different practices in Islam and it was necessary to become a mainstream practice to be incorporated in Islamic studies textbooks of primary- and secondary-level education.
Criticising the writers for writing Islamic textbooks with baseless information and errors, Sayed said that students should be educated with true Islamic education based on the Quran and called for reforms in the textbooks.
