The United Kingdom’s human rights ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Eleanor Sanders, at a seminar in Dhaka on Wednesday said that human rights of all must be protected regardless of race, religion or caste.

‘The UK will always work in this regard,’ Eleanor Sanders mentioned while delivering a special lecture on democracy and human rights at the seminar at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on Dhaka University campus.


Eleanor also emphasised on ensuring justice, accountability, human rights and fundamental freedoms at the seminar.

Dhaka University Applied Democracy Lab and British high commission in Dhaka jointly organised the seminar, said a press release.

DU pro-vice-chancellor for administration Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha was present as chief guest while British high commission’s second secretary Vanessa Beaumont spoke as special guest at the seminar, which was chaired by Mohammad Aynul Islam, director of the DU Applied Democracy Lab and associate professor of the DU political science.

Sayema Haque Bidisha said that the young generation had played an important role in various political and social movements of the country, including the in July-August mass uprising.

Calling on the young generation to contribute to building a state based on democracy, justice and equality, she said that the Applied Democracy Lab had been established at Dhaka University to inspire students to practice democracy.

Earlier, Eleanor Sanders visited various graffiti painted on the Dhaka University campus in the student-led mass uprising.
