The Bangladesh women’s national football team will be honoured with the Ekushey Padak 2025 in the sports category for their remarkable contribution in recent times.

The ministry of cultural affairs advisor, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, announced the recipients' names during a press conference at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday.

This is the first time any sports team would receive the country’s second-highest civilian award since it was introduced in 1976.

The women’s team secured two consecutive SAFF Women's Championship titles in 2022 and 2024 with veteran forward Sabina Khatun as captain.

‘I am very pleased and happy to hear the news. It’s a great honour for all of the team members,’ Sabina told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Apart from the women’s team, 14 eminent citizens are going to receive the award, which commemorates martyrs of the language movement day, February 21, 1952, for their notable contributions in their respective fields.

‘February 21’ has been recognised as International Mother Language Day globally since 2000, after being established by UNESCO in 1999.
