Intelligence officials seized 17.5 kilogrammes of gold from the luggage of two passengers of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at Sylhet  Osmani International Airport on Thursday morning.

The officials also detained the two passengers for their alleged involvement in bringing the gold evading government tax.


Injamam-Ul Haque, assistant customs commissioner at the airport, confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· of the seizure of the gold and detention of the two passengers.

The detained are Aftab Uddin, 36, of Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet, and Saiyad Ahmed, 24, of

Barlekha upazila in Moulvibazar, the airport authorities said.

They said that the flight BG 252 of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines coming from Sharjah Airport of Dubai landed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at around 8:50am.

On information, a team of National Security Force in association with customs intelligence agency officials challenged the two passengers of the flight while they were going out through the Immigration passage and recovered 120 bars and 10 egg-shaped balls of gold weighed 17.5 kilogrammes after searching their bags, the airport authorities said.

Injamam-Ul Haque told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the market price of the seized gold would be around Tk 21 crore.

‘The process of handing over the detained to the Biman Bandar police station is underway,’ he said.
