Another inter-district girls’ football match was halted amid protests by leaders and activists of Islami Andolan Bangladesh at Taraganj in Rangpur Thursday afternoon.
Taraganj police station officer-in-charge Saidul Islam said that the incident forced upazila administration to impose section 144 on the match venue to avoid any untoward situation.
A match between the Joypurhat Girls Football Team and the Rajshahi Girls Football Team was scheduled to take place at 3:00pm on Thursday at the Burirhat High School ground at the upazila as part of the inter-district football tournament, according to local people.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh Taraganj unit president Ashraf Ali announced that they would prevent the match from happening, they said.
The football tournament organisers, Saddam Hossain and Sirajul Islam, alleged that Ashraf had started a conspiracy to foil the football match since 1:00pm on the day.
On December 28, 2024, two football matches were stalled after attacks on the women’s football matches in Jaipurhat and Dinajpur districts.
On January 30, the interim government expressed its deep concern over reports of incidents of women being prevented from engaging in recreational activities.
On February 5, the stalled Jaipurhat football match was held but Dinajpur match is yet to take place.
