A Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leader was shot dead in front of his business establishment at Purba Lalpur at Fatullah in Narayanganj early Friday.

The deceased is Mamun Hossain, 40, a joint convener of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s volunteer wing Swechchhasebak Dal’s Fatullah unit.

‘The incident took place at about 4:00am on Friday, said sub-inspector Kamal Mia of Fatullah police station.

‘He was shot in the right eye. He was taken to Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead,’ he added.

Mamun ran a construction materials business at Lalpur.

The victim’s family suspected that a long-standing business dispute with the family of a local Awami League leader could be a possible motive for the murder.

Police, however, could not confirm the reason behind the murder, saying that it would be known after an investigation.

Quoting family members, police said that Mamun had been at his business establishment till Thursday night.

Later after returning home, someone called him outside. Shortly afterwards, his family was informed that he had been shot.

Azad Mia, who sleeps inside Mamun’s business establishment, said that he heard several gunshots and came out, only to find Mamun lying motionless in a pool of blood.

‘At that time, we saw that two persons were fleeing the scene,’ he added.
