Leftist leaders on Friday at a commemoration meeting emphasised that a society free from discrimination and repression could be built by following the ideals of veteran labour leader and former Communist Party of Bangladesh president Shahidullah Chowdhury.

The CPB organised the event, commemorating Shahidullah Chowdhury, at the Bangladesh Medical Association auditorium on Topkhana Road in Dhaka, with party president Mohammad Shah Alam in the chair.

Shah Alam stated that the August 5 student and people’s uprising created an opportunity to establish a just and equitable Bangladesh, urging everyone to work toward that vision by following Shahidullah Chowdhury’s principles.

Former CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim called for unity among all leftist political parties to build a society free from discrimination and repression.

Khalequzzaman, an adviser to the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, urged the youth to work towards forming a socialist society that upholds the rights of common people.

CPB general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince described Shahidullah Chowdhury as a dedicated labour leader who, as president of the Bangladesh Trade Union Centre, fought for workers’ rights.

Prince also noted that Shahidullah Chowdhury passed away on January 3 in Dhaka at the age of 84 due to age-related complications.

Other speakers included left democratic alliance coordinator and general secretary Iqbal Kabir Jahid, Oikya NAP president Abdus Sabur, and Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu.
