Chattogram police on Saturday arrested former Awami League leader and former councillor of the Chattogram City Corporation, Rekha Alam Chowdhury, as part of a special operation.

Additionally, 19 other people, affiliated with the Awami League and its associate bodies, were detained in the operation.


The Chattogram Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests in a press release.

Kazi Md Rafiq Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Double Mooring police said that Rekha Alam Chowdhury was arrested on Friday night in the Purba Madarbari area of the city.

She was produced before court on Saturday noon under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and the court sent her to jail, the OC said.

Authorities are currently investigating whether there is any specific case filed against her.

Rekha Alam Chowdhury was actively involved in the Chattogram city Mohila Awami League and had twice been elected as a councillor from reserved Ward 8, which comprises Enayet Bazar, Purba Madarbari, and Paschim Madarbari.

The CMP press release further stated that between Friday and Saturday afternoon, 19 other people were arrested in various parts of the city.
