The Indian Border Security Force installed CCTV cameras along the zero line of Dakshin Banshjani border in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram early Monday.

The Border Guard Bangladesh strongly protested the installation, stating it violated international law.

According to local residents and BGB officials, the cameras were set up at about 2:00am on the Indian side.

BGB learned about the matter from locals in the morning and immediately lodged a protest.

Residents said that the CCTV cameras were installed near a 200-year-old mosque undergoing reconstruction, where people from both India and Bangladesh offer prayers.

Alamgir Hossain, the muezzin of Jami Mosque in Dakshin Banshjani, said that the mosque was established by their ancestors. Despite the partition, which placed the border line through the village, their bond remained intact.

BGB-22 battalion commanding officer lieutenant colonel Masudur Rahman said that they had formally protested to the BSF, which later assured them that the cameras would be removed.

The government in January urged India to refrain from provocative actions amid tensions along the border over the construction of barbed wire fences in violation of the international law at five points in bordering districts of Chapainawabgang, Lalmonirhat and Naogaon,

India had already constructed barbed wire fences in areas of 3,271 kilometres of the 4,156km border, according to Bangladesh government.
