A Chattogram court on Wednesday granted permission for a three-day jail gate interrogation of former Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saiful Islam in the murder case of Hridoy Chandra Tarua, a university student killed during the student-led mass uprising.

Chattogram metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Mostafa issued the order at around 3:00pm, said Mofizul Haq Bhuiyan, the public prosecutor of the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.


Former CMP commissioner Saiful Islam was detained in Dhaka in a murder case filed with the Chandgaon police station, the PP said, adding that the police sought seven-day remand, but the court granted permission for a three-day jail gate interrogation.

According to court sources, Saiful Islam has been shown arrested in the murder case of Hridoy Chandra Tarua, a student of Chattogram University, who was killed during the July uprising. According to the case statement, Hridoy, a student of the Chittagong University鈥檚 history department, participated in a quota reform student protest on July 18 past yeat.

Under the directives of several accused individuals, attacks were carried out on protesting students, the case said.

At one stage, Hridoy sustained bullet wounds in Chattogram鈥檚 Chandgaon area and was was admitted to a hospital. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in Dhaka on July 23.

Following the incident, Hridoy鈥檚 classmate Azizul Haque filed a case on September 20 past year with the Chandgaon police station in the city, naming 206 individuals and an additional 400-500 unidentified suspects.

Earlier on Wednesday, former CMP Commissioner Saiful Islam was arrested in the capital Dhaka.

On August 23 past year, he was appointed as the 32nd commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police from Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).

Later, he was transferred to the Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi on August 21.
