
Speakers including poets, activists and academics at a discussion held at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2025 on Wednesday, said that slogans during the student-led mass uprising depicted common people鈥檚 language and aspirations.
Organised by Bangla Academy, the discussion titled Poetry of 2024 Mass uprising was held on the main stage on the 12th day of the fair.
Poet and thinker Farhad Mazhar presided over the discussion.
Poet Hasan Robayet said in his keynote speech that common people always avoided the language of the rich and that of the rulers.
鈥楾he Bengali nationalist movement was spearheaded by the middle class of Kolkata during the British era, but the common people avoided the standard language used in popular poetry, songs and slogans,鈥 Hasan Robayet said, adding that slogans of the student-led mass uprising portrayed people鈥檚 anger through abusive language.
Moiyen Zalal Chowdhury said that people expressed their anger and demand through the slogans composed by their own community language.
Farhad Mazhar said that the slogans used in various movements were examples of the fascist milestones.
The event was comprised of discussion, music performance, and poetry recitation.
On February 12, Bangla Academy announced Kabi Jasimuddin Sahitya Puraskar 2025 and Syed Waliullah Literary Award 2024 by issuing a press release.聽
The release was signed by Bangla Academy director general Mohammad Azam.
The director general said that poet Al Mujahidi was awarded Kabi Jasimuddin Sahitya Puraskar 2025 while author Hans Harder and Barnali Saha was awarded Syed Waliullah Literary Award 2024 to be handed over at the closing ceremony of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.聽
A total of 89 new titles were published on Wednesday, raising the total number of books published at the fair to 917 so far, according to academy officials.
Out of 89 books, 27 were collections of poems and 22 were novels while 15 were collections of short stories.
A discussion on Anti-Discrimination Student Movement will be held on the academy premises on Thursday.
